Choices for Youth SE HUB
Location: ST. JOHN’S, NL
Project Type: RENOVATION

The Choices for Youth Social Enterprise HUB project was an adaptive reuse of an old 2 storey concrete commercial building, transformed into a not-for-profit vocational school for young people with training spaces, commercial kitchen, textile production spaces, sewing centers, woodworking & carpentry rooms, and automotive shops. The educational spaces are further supplemented by program led retail space, in the form of retail and food stores - The Neighborhood and The Crust respectively - all housed on the main floor along the front public face. The smaller second floor contains offices and support rooms, admin and management, board rooms, collaborative use space, and additional team training and workshop areas.

The project consisted primarily of a complete interior fit up within the original open space including space programming, interior design, FF&E, and millwork. The outside facade was conceived in two parts. Large storefront glazing was placed along the front face of the building the original window openings reclaimed to bring much needed light into the front areas. The front face with an EIFS covering, aesthetically returning to the original Art Deco treatment of its first incarnation as an automotive repair shop. Side walls have been given a flat metal siding treatment, so that Choices for Youth, in the near future, will be providing brilliant splashes of color in the form of full size street art murals, contrasting with the subdued and stately front design. This, with the treatment to the front face, would bring the building back to its original status as a beautiful landmark within the area, and invigorate it with a new life.
