Memorial University’s vision is clear, they are in need of facilities to accommodate growth, as well as enable the recruitment/retention of world class faculty and top students. Our design team has been working with Memorial to design a building that will provide interdisciplinary learning and research space for Faculties of Science and Engineering. The building will be positioned on a signature site, providing a new gateway into the campus. Science and Engineering will be put on display inside and outside of the building, which takes design cues from natural elements and local building traditions.
The building will house programs in Electrical and Computer Science (research and learning labs). It will also house renewable energy teaching and research labs. The teaching lab and research labs are co-located so undergraduates can assist with graduate research and participate in more hands-on learning opportunities.
At the 2nd floor, the facility will be connected via a bridge to University Center at the Food Court Level (which also connects on the other side to the existing Engineering Building) and will be a student-focused floor – housing the Senior and Junior design studios, Computer Lab and Classroom, and student collaboration areas.
The Computer lab will have an active learning setup with flexible furniture, and flat panel screen at perimeter to work in small groups. The Electrical/Computer Studio includes electrical benches with utilities as well as pod workstations for groups with tables and chairs in the center for the studio for teams to come together. The building will also house a student projects lab and optics research lab. The new building is targeting LEED Silver.
